What Happens Behind the Scenes of a TV Advert Shoot?

When people watch a TV advert, they usually see just the polished 30 seconds that make it to the screen. What they don’t see are the many moving parts working together behind the camera to bring that moment to life.

From lighting and sound checks to last-minute changes and conversations between takes, there is a lot happening before a commercial reaches the screen.

At Impress Video, we’ve been part of countless behind-the-scenes (BTS) shoots over the years, and trust us, what happens off camera is just as important as what makes it on screen. The best adverts aren’t made by luck. They’re built on solid preparation, creative teamwork, and the ability to adapt when things get unpredictable. A BTS shoot is where the problem-solving, laughter, and magic truly happen.

We recently captured some of those moments during a shoot with Scottish painter Steven Brown.

While the final video captured his artistic journey, the behind-the-scenes footage revealed another side of the production: the creative decisions, the teamwork and even an unexpected burst of laughter that interrupted filming.

Inside Our TV Advert Shoot with Steven Brown

Behind every successful advert is a team working together to bring the creative vision to life. During our shoot with Steven Brown, each member of the crew played a part in capturing the story.

Gurmit, our director, wasn’t just calling “Action!” He was guiding the conversation, helping draw out emotion and authenticity so Steven’s story felt natural and human.

Meanwhile, Harry, our cinematographer, was capturing every detail with purpose. From lighting and composition to subtle camera movements, his work helped bring the visuals to life.

And then there’s María, our sound specialist, whose work is essential to every production. During one take, she picked up laughter echoing from a nearby room. Gurmit handled the interruption with his trademark humour, asking the neighbours if they could “laugh just a bit more quietly”.

Everyone laughed, the tension eased, and filming continued. It’s a small moment, but it captures the reality of a shoot: teamwork, adaptability and a positive atmosphere can make all the difference.

The Moments You Don’t See on Screen

A finished TV advert may look effortless, but filming rarely happens without a few unexpected moments.

During our shoot with Steven Brown, even the sounds from a neighbouring room became part of the behind-the-scenes story. María had to contend with laughter coming through from next door, while Gurmit couldn’t resist joking about the interruption.

It’s a small moment, but it captures something important about filming: not everything goes exactly to plan. Background noise, unexpected interruptions and the occasional retake are all part of the experience.

What matters is how the team responds. Staying flexible, keeping the atmosphere relaxed and working together help the production move forward without losing sight of the creative goal.

These are the moments viewers rarely see in the finished advert, yet they are part of what makes every production unique.

From Behind the Scenes to the Finished Video

Behind every finished TV advert are the people, creative decisions and on-set moments that help bring the original idea to life.

The behind-the-scenes footage from our shoot with Steven Brown offers a glimpse into that process, showing a different side of production from the polished final result.

While viewers see the finished advert, they rarely see the teamwork, adjustments and unexpected moments that happen along the way. Both perspectives tell part of the story.
